I was speaking to someone from Tomberlin today who has actually owned a MadAss 50 for the last year and he loves it. Says the suspension is great. He’s ridden up his share of curbs with her. He also said that his lovely little 50cc idn’t 50cc’s any more. He said the 50cc engine that’s include will get you a solid 30MPH, but if you wanna haul you can use any of the big bore kits for the Honda CRF50 or XR50 because they all have the same engines. Apparently Honda’s patent on the XR50 engine has expired so now you’re seeing it in a bunch of other places including the MadAss. So what does that mean to you and I? Loads of tweaking goodness. You can go to sites like this and this and begin to get the picture. It’s real easy to turn your cute 50cc MadAss into an 88, 107 or even a 124cc MONSTER!
Casey went on to give a few more hints as to what to expect. He said it will come in a manual 3 speed (I believe) and Automatic CVT version. He suggests that if you plan on tuning, you may want to consider getting the Manual version. He expects them to come to the USA, Canada, Mexico and Australia in Flat Black, Silver, and Yellow. Each MadAss is an electric start with a backup kickstart. There are a few other details, but I’m gonna save them for now… mostly because I’m dead tired and need to get my beauty sleep.
Catch you all tomorrow!

I hear you can mod 50cc xr motors up to even 137ccs now! Sweet! I was big into 50s before I got my Ruckus. Any word as to if these are going to be rated off-road only? Or street legallable?

The thing I’m worried about is the fact that it will be relatively anemic without some sort of engine upgrade, and a larger engine swap, stroker kit, or anything bringing it up above 50 CCs is technically illegal.
That is, its legal until the time of inspection, when they look down there and say “heeey, that looks like a big 50..”
poo.

Why don’t ya just wait until you have it inspected then upgrade it? Not sure even if you do have it inspected with the stocker that it will be street legal anyhow. A lot of imports are not registerable because they do not come with a VIN #. I am hoping it will be registerable though!

Talking with my contact at Tomberlin, he says they’ve gone to great measures to get the MadAss street legal. As for the legalities of a larger motor? I’m not sure… But he also says he’s trying to convence the big boss to import the 500cc (that’s five hundred, not fifty with an extra zero) when it’s finally in production. Not anemic in the least.

Well, I know one thing for sure, I can’t wait to try throwing some of my 4-stroke modding knowledge at it. I bet a tweaked 50 4s will easily hold it’s own against a 2s.. Quicker off the line with more low-end torque and such.

Just a heads-up that we’ve got two MadAss 50′s enroute to our shop (Ptown Scooters) here in Portland, Oregon. One is a 4-speed manual and the other is a CVT automatic. We’ll drop a note when we’ve had a chance to run them around a bit

That’s awesome! We look forward to hearing the verdict!

Hey I just bought a 140cc MANUAL motor to put into my 50cc AUTOMATIC…does anyone know if that will cause complications in converting? thanks!

I got a 50cc automatic madass and heard that I would lose 4th gear if I went over 88cc, (possible gearing)we *need* to keep it auto to qualify as a moped.
also is there a problem with the wiring if I put another motor on it?
what kind of motor is stock on a 50cc MadAss? Honda? China?
