This little piece has some interesting facts. I haven’t verified them myself, but it’s the first time I’ve heard some of this. Here’s a snippet:
edmontonsun.com – News – Scooters shift to high gear: “The majority of the clientele are guys between 14 and 25, but everyone from teenagers to seniors rides scooters, and girls are starting to get more into it, said Liley.
A lot of the younger guys modify their scooters to add speed, said Liley.
‘We have a whole clientele of mostly young guys who are into hopping scooters up and racing them,’ he said, adding that scooters make up the largest racing circuit in the world…
…There’s a misconception in Edmonton that scooters can be used only in the summer months, says Liley, who is trying to dispel that myth.
‘Realistically, a person can ride a scooter for 10 months with no problems,’ he said.
Liley throws winter tires on his GTS 250 Vespa – the Mercedes of all scooters – and rides it all through the winter months also.
Despite the unlikely market, Liley and Hatheway, who are both 29 years old, opened the store because of their love for scooters, which they’ve been fixing up and riding since they were 15.
‘I didn’t want to work for anyone else,’ said Liley.
The store, which was named Dealership of the Year in 2005, sells the largest selection of scooters in North America…
…Scooters account for about 80% of the motorcycle industry in the world, said Liley, who expects his own business to grow exponentially over the years.
“It’s getting better,” said Liley, who plans to retire rich.”
