Rumblings of the American arrival of "the most powerful scooter in the universe"!

Dudel is picking up something on this Scoot-ar (Radar for scoo… nevermind). What he’s hearing is that Piaggio may be blessing us with yet ANOTHER Gilera rebranded scooter, the GP 800!

What does that mean to you and I? That we might be test riding a twin cylinder, 850cc, 75 hp, big-wheeled super-scooter as soon as 2008!

I welcome the idea of one day laying my hands on her aluminum handle bars and my tuckus on her exclusive Italian upholstery. You’ll be the first to know if/when Piaggio makes the announcement.

Weird, I’ve read several descriptions of the GP800 that indicated a traditional-style stepped transmission with computer automation.

    But the Gilera site says:

I’m no Italian speaker, but the items “Cambio” and “Frizione” seem to be describing a traditional centrifugal-clutch CVT. That’s pretty cool.

Wow, I’m all about more power but there seems to be something lost in this bike.. It’s really not a scooter anymore I think. This thing is cool but it really seems more of a motorcycle. Motorcycle price tag too I’m sure.

If it’s still an automatic with the step-through design, then it’s still a scooter. What is your definition of a scooter??

I’ve got a Piaggio X9 500 — sign me up for the upgrade! Scooter, motorcycle, whatever…it kicks butt.

I dunno…technically it is a scooter but for me a big part of what I enjoy about scootin is the small size/displacement. If I was going to buy something this big I would likely get a regular bike.

What is with this displacement arms race? Why does it seem that every new motorcycle, and now scooter, that is announced has to be BIGGER than the ones that came before it? Ten years ago you could have blamed it on cheap gas, but now I wonder if motorcycle companies hired Tim Taylor to plan their product lines. There’s a point where “more power!” becomes antithetical to the scooter concept.

So what’s the benefit of buying a “regular bike” at that displacement instead of a scooter? I would love to hear the logic behind buying a shiting motorcycle instead of a scooter, no matter what the size. I love beating motorcycles with my scooter and this one would make it sweeter!

This thing has the “BDS” factor for sure. heh I would find it more interesting I think if the chassis and wheels were smaller but retained the twin cylinder 800 engine. Now what I’d really like to see is a Dragster 50 chassis with a twin-cylinder 800.. wheelie bars a standard option of course.
