Montreal Gazette – canada.com network: “Last summer, Michelle Calvert had had enough. Enough of exorbitant car insurance rates. Enough of sky-high gas prices. Enough of being mired in gridlock and searching for empty parking spaces in downtown Toronto.

Yet, instead of silently stewing, she decided to do something more proactive. Namely, she sold her BMW 3 Series and replaced it with a Yamaha 125-Series – scooter, that is.

From a fiscal and time-management point of view, Calvert said selling her old Bimmer ranks as her most prudent move to date. Her vino red Yamaha was $4,000 off the lot – less than the sales tax for a base model BMW. Her annual insurance premium is only $600, about half what she was paying for her car. And she figures maintenance for her scooter costs about $100 a year – about a 10th of what it cost her to maintain her car. Best of all, her gas consumption has plunged by 90 per cent.”
