What’s cool about this poll is that it should show you not only the results, but also a global map of the responses… Give it a shot!

Anyone know why there are no scooter riders in Montana, North/South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska? Nothing… right down the middle. What’s up with that?

Then there’s West Virginia, South Carolina and Alabama. Not so weird.

I can’t really tell about Missouri. Looks like someone’s right on the Kansas border there.

    Ideas?

I have ridden motorcycles all my life from cruisers to big touring bikes. As with many other motorcycle riders, I do not feel that I have given up anything by trading my 750 Magna in on a Burgman 400 or my 1500 Goldwing in on a Burgman 650. Both of my new “scooters” will haul two people in comfort, carry lots of cargo, handle nicely on the freeway, and achieve speeds that I seldom reached on my motorcycles.

It is hard for people to equate these great machines to the motor scooters that many folks picture when you use the term “scooter.” That image would be a short wheelbase vehicle with ten inch wheels, a 50cc air cooled, two cycle engine, which does 35 mph and is great for coeds to zip around the campus.

However, the situation gets worse. The term “scooter” is further confused by the small four inch wheeled, electric or gas powered “scooters” that young kids use to zip down the sidewalk and terrorize the neighborhood. So when I mention that I took my “scooter on a trip” people ask me if it is legal to drive those things on the road.

Now recently the term “scooter” has deteriorated even further. I tell someone that I really love riding my scooter, and they respond “Oh yea aren’t they great. My grandmother has one and it has really given her a new sense of freedom. Medicare picked up the cost of hers did they pay for yours as well? Grandpa put a lift on the back of the car and they can now take it to walmart with them. And the folks at the Scooter Store were so helpful and billed the government directly.”

I usually just say I took my motorcycle or bike on a ride, as that is a much more accurate description that the term “scooter”. Oh, and the term “Mega scooter” or “Maxi Scooter” doesn’t help much either and usually just elicits a response like “Oh, I should tell my grandma about those — she weighs almost 400 pounds.”

Thanks to having Firefox and IE, I could add both mounts. My first time on a Majesty and especially when I got the SWing, I realized how car-like they were. I thought,”These folks are copping to the fact that their cars are WAY too expensive but they’ll never look back and so people in my economic strata (geologic not aeronautic) have these.” This theory will bare out when we see a Chevy Monte Scooter.
