Disgruntled motorists who are fed up with rising gasoline prices are looking for other ways to get around town – and businesses that sell scooters are reaping the benefits.

About 1,500 scooters are registered in Manitoba – triple the number registered two years ago.

Kobi Hasid, who owns ScooterCity on Main Street in Winnipeg, says his business has more than doubled since he opened three years ago, and he credits the rising cost of gas for his success.

“We saw it last year, when we had the increase in the gas prices,” he told CBC News. “A lot of people came and said, ‘It’s time for us to get something cheaper and get off the SUVs,’ and once they get into the scooter, they didn’t look back.”

Brent McNaught has also felt the heat of the city’s scooter market. McNaught’s family has been in the business of selling cars in Winnipeg for more than 30 years, and under McNaught’s guidance, the family is branching out into scooter sales.
