Commuter Poll – How many miles?

News

Hey folks! THIS Wednesday is National “Ride to Work Day”, so if you own a Ruckus be sure to factor that into the equation. Wouldn’t want you to get fired for coming in 2 hours late. Hehe… I kid, I kid. You might just be :45 minutes late.

Anyway, the whole “ride to work” thing brings up an interesting point. For how many of you is a daily scooter ride to work feasible? No, not if you had a Burgman 650 instead of a MadAss 50… On your favorite scooter in your garage? Could you do it on your 150cc Vespa? your 200cc Lambretta? How about your 70cc kitted Dragster? And if you DO commute to work on a scooter, how is it working out for ya?

I’ll tell you the reason I ask after this poll closes next week. For right now, let us know what your daily commute looks like. We (you and I) can look at the map to see how it ranges for people in North America, Europe, Asia, etc. It’ll be fun. Give it a shot!

After you cast your vote you can read up on the whole “Ride to Work” phenomenon by clicking the title link. They’re on their 15th year anniversary, so get out there and make it a good one! Even if you have to leave an hour early. *wink*

…can I add in my wife’s commute, too? She commutes 20 miles one way to work on her Helix. I just go a measly 5 miles one way on my Bajaj.

My commute is 11 miles each way, and I’ve been doing that on my Reflex now for a year and a half. So far, I’ve put 6,000 miles on my used Reflex without problems. I love the fact that increasing gas costs means that my weekly commuting costs might go from six bucks to eight! :)

17 miles each way for me here in Austin. All on a 50cc Scarabeo DiTech with the hammer down almost the whole way. Been at it for about 10 months, and I try to travel only in fair weather. 4000 miles so far and no problems. I’m amazed this little scoot can haul my 200 pounds around at 45-50 mph, but it does.

I commute 15-miles to work and 13-miles of that is highway. I cannot get from where I live to work without going on the highway (common in many American cities). I currently ride a BV500 as keeping up with traffic means going 75-mph (despite the fact that the speedlimit is 60-mph).

Just over 6 miles to work on surface streets and including lights about 15 min. on the Zuma.
Just over 7 miles by freeway and including lights, about 10 minutes on the SWing.

dudel is right, with the construction of interstates in these smaller places, some do not keep any frontage roads or old HWY routes.
It’s a challenge to find a way outta town on the Zuma. As long as NDOT, Union Pacific and a few others aren’t looking….

I commute 20 miles round trip daily and some weekends. I ride a People 250 2006. Have been doing this since third week in April of this year. All city and county surface streets with moderate -to-bumper to bumper traffic, and lovin every bit of it.

I grew sick of the hour-long commute and what seems like a hundred lights between me and work, so I stopped doing it on surface streets a few weeks ago. I’m still trying to get comfortable with freeway riding on my Reflex, but it’s a hard slog. But I figure I can ride half the distance that way and slice off 15-20 minutes.

Sadly, no commuting for me on Wednesday as we are leaving for Oregon and the coast and a familial gathering for the purpose of overeating.

But my usual daily jaunt is 25-26 miles.

On the days I go to the gym after work, usually 3 days a week, I take the scooter 3 miles to work, 8 miles to gym, 8 miles home. I have a Honda Elite 80 and it has been working out great for over a year now. I want a 125 cc scooter but don’t strictly need it. :-)

10 miles each way thru city streets on a P200. Takes me about a half an hour as opposed to 10 minutes by freeway in the car. The morning ride is a thing of beauty in the summer…coming home is a tad hot here in the central valley of CA…it was 110 today. :P

I used to commute to work on my Mojito Custom 50, but I changed jobs and now the Mojito just isn’t fast enough. So it’s car driving which sucks.

I travel 2.5 miles each way to work on my BV200. Made it through winter except for a few days. I chose the Piaggio BV200 because it is a 4-stroke (just add gas and go). Plus, many of the speed limits here in OK are usually 40 mph (which translates to 50), and things are really spread out around town. I like the feeling of having enough power to hit the interstate (although rarely, if at all). My choice was based on ease of operation, length of commute, speed, and mileage. I looked at buying a motorcycle, but I learned they don’t get much more mileage than a good Toyota car. Currently, I have been averaging 60 mpg since September, but I could do a lot better without gunning it at stoplights (losing weight wouldn’t hurt either)! I can’t tell you enough how great it is! I thought it would be so dangerous to ride, but I found it to be one of the greatest forms of transportation out there!

travel about 12kms to work and back, most every day of the week. Would take about ten 15 minuets in a car about 25-30 miuets walking and about 5 minuets on teh BW/Ruckus. All urban city street, never wiat for traffic on the scooter, its the best!

I’ve been commuting for a little over 3 years in Dallas. My original commute was 19 miles round-trip. Now it can be as short as 6.6 miles round-trip, but I always go a longer way so it’s about 10 rt. My ride is a Stella (first 2 years an ’02, now an Atomic Fireball). In mid-winter the commute will change to about 25 round trip.
