WTOL-TV Toledo, OH: Drivers Turning to Two Wheels: “TOLEDO — Some drivers are fighting back against high gas prices, leaving behind their 4-wheeled gas guzzlers and opting for 2 wheels instead. And when you realize that some of the 2-wheeled vehicles get up to 70 miles per gallon, it’s easy to see why they’re popular.

Motorcycles and scooters are nothing like your car. They’re smaller, less protected, and there’s less room. But with gas hovering near $2.69 a gallon, many drivers are parking their cars, and trying them. ‘Last year, we have people looking because we hit $2.00 a gallon,’ said Steve Kauffman, a sales associate with Honda East, a motorcycle dealer in Maumee. ‘This year it probably tripled, with people looking for scooters.’

So far this week, Honda East has sold 10 or 15 scooters. ‘They get built, and most of the time they do not make it to the [sales] floor. They are selling that fast,’ said Kauffman. The size of the scooter doesn’t seem to matter, either. Drivers are picking up the bigger ones, costing as much as $8,000, but also the smaller scooters, starting at around $1,800.”
