Moped diaries / You pedal, you ride, you hit a top speed of 20 mph. But their owners wouldn’t have it any other way.: “The moped, once an emblem of youthful mobility and high gas mileage, is making a cultural comeback, and the timing couldn’t be better, according to members of the San Francisco-based Creatures of the Loin, the local branch of the national Moped Army.

‘You can park anywhere,’ says Graham French, 25, co-founder of the Creatures. ‘It gives you a lot of freedom — it’s faster than a car when you factor in all the time you save not looking for parking.’

‘Not to mention,’ adds Benji Broad, 29, the other founder of the Creatures, tugging at his hood so that a hunk of red hair snakes over his shoulder, ‘it gets great gas mileage.’

‘One hundred miles per gallon,’ offers Jay Jean Hank Ho, 23, drawing a cigarette from his pack. ‘With the impending economic collapse of the U.S. currency and the gas crisis, I’m preparing for the apocalypse with a moped.’”
