There’s been a lot of talk about mopeds lately… what’s a moped, what’s not. I want to ask YOU what makes a moped. Please place a check in all of the applicable boxes.

Your Opinion: A moped MUST have which of the following traits?
Pedals
Bicycle styled frame
49 – 50cc Engine
Chain drive
Restricted to 30 – 35 mph (about 50 – 55 km/h)
Automatic transmission
Motor less than 2HP
A crazed moped jockey on the seat

Well for myself one of the biggest determining factors are the wheel size as compared to a “scooter” and to a lesser degree the overall size and width… mopeds seem to be slim and tall. Minor technical details like pedals or engine size seem less important to myself when labeling such machines.

My vote goes to the moped jockey. Hotness. Sure, it doesn’t necessarily make the vehicle a moped, but if a girl that cute wanted to call a segue a moped, I’d call it a moped.

There is such a wide range of gray area at both ends. A recumbent can do 35-40+ unassisted but is still an HPV like a Little Tykes Coupe. A Metro II might do 35 on a good day but can’t be operated without the motor. Perhaps a realignment of the defs to show a “power assisted HPV” to be any vehicle which could be operated normally with the power plant disengaged (gas, electric, fuel cell, solar). The nopeds you show really would not fall into that category unless you could fold in the pegs and walk it like an old “velocipede.”
