ShanghaiDaily.com – Shanghai Reporter trying to get the word out on child safety and mopeds/scooters.

Madcap motorcyclists must be made to see sense: “
Everyday when in traffic, I see moped riders wearing no helmet. What I find even more disturbing is, when I see an adult is steering the vehicle with a child on the back or even standing in front of the seat, holding onto the handle bars and not wearing a helmet.

Having ridden a motorcycle myself for many years, I know how dangerous they are and that one should only operate them with a full sense of responsibility.

This goes especially for adults who transport passengers and I’d even go as far as to say that infants up to a certain age should not be transported on motorcycles or mopeds at all.

Apart from tightening the law, people need to be educated to understand the risks and responsibilities. If you have the money to buy a moped there should be enough for a helmet as well.

The people are China’s greatest asset and I hope to read and see less of these terrible things in the future. If you need to transport an infant, make use of the public transport system which is less dangerous. “

In unrelated news: The not-scooter CVT from Honda “will go into production in 12 months… insiders say it will be on sale in Japan early next year and be available in Europe by the end of 2007.”

I’m not surprised that people aren’t taking the transit system. It’s less convenient than hopping onto your own ride and going where, when and how you want.

Same thing in Vietnam. People can carry everything on their scooter. I think this is a habit thing. However, Vietnam has passed law required helmets for long distance travel. In city though, people don’t like it because they’ve been riding like that since forever. I know I know, it’s dangerous. But I swear the Vietnamese are some of the best scooterists on earth!
