(secretly they REALLY wish GM would come out with a micro Hummer)
You know… I’ve always wondered what Hummer owners would say about TheScoop. Would they respect our love for small displacement? Would they care what was going on in the world of micro riders? Turns out that last week I got to find out!
A certain Hummer forum (with over 5,300 members) was recently turned-on to TheScooterScoop and judging by the number of hits we received and the comments in their forum I’d say there were HUGE FANS! and… if by “fans” I mean “fanatical haters of all things small”, then you’d know exactly what I meant. Now I’m not going to post a link to their forum because I don’t wanna start a flame war AND I don’t want to reciprocate the hits… But I’ll give you an idea of what’s going on over there.
The whole thing started out harmlessly enough. One guy was searching for Hummer Fingers and found an old post we did about the death of the H1 called “So long Humvee H1“. He got a good laugh out of it, but THEN came the follow ups with comments like “Scooter Fags!”, “That has to be the most stupid site I have seen yet.”, or “That was depressing and stupid.”
Depressing AND stupid? Wow, TheScooterScoop has been called “depressing” and it’s been called “stupid”, but NEVER in the same sentence… this is a new low for the scoop. Now, don’t get me wrong… not all the posts were violent attacks, there were other discussions as well that were harmless and even funny. I just thought it would be interesting to see what some of the others thought about us (the scoop).
At the end of the day, and when the dust is all settled, I didn’t learn anything I hadn’t already surmised. Hummer owners don’t like the fact that most scooter fans don’t dig hummers and so to be fair Hummer owners don’t like scooters (or microcars)…. which is too bad, because the real issue isn’t about hating each other’s vehicles but about getting people to see the benefits of smaller vehicles on the road ESPECIALLY when it comes to commuting (yourself) to work or school. Unless your job is farming, construction, landscaping, archeology, forestry or military OR you’re part of a car pool, you just can’t beat a microcommuter to get your to your destination.
…though, there’s a group of Japanese who would disagree.

I just wouldn’t feel too bad about having someone who thinks the hummer “is the coolest” say that your site is dumb. Hell, that is almost a compliment. It sounds to me like they are the ones looking for external validation.

Go back and read my post. I never said it was stupid and depressing to drive a Hummer. I said it was sad and depressing to hate someone because they drive something different than you.
I really don’t care what you drive, just don’t hate me because I don’t drive what you do.

Driving a paramilitary vehicle on public roads, drunk on self-grandeur and masquerading as Rambo atop four jacked-up wheels, robbing two parking spaces and guzzling up nonrenewable resources everywhere it tramples is not only stupid, arrogant, but warlike. It’s a sickness that has been allowed to manifest and flourish by a*sholes in Detroit and warmongers not unlike those bloody killers who reside in the White House. Enough excess!
When I ride my 120+mpg scooter, I make a quiet, yet resounding statement against those who seek to destroy our society, other societies, the environment, and ultimately–the human race. Exactly because it’s a free country, we should do our best to uphold it and not ruin it for the future generations. The world as we know it has no need for Hummers, or Canyoneros.

Tim, we don’t hate you because you don’t drive/ride what we do… we simply have a strong dislike for people who make the completely irrational and irresponsible choice of a 4 ton 12MPG tank as a commuter vehicle at a time when our oil dependency is causing this country and its people so much pain, not to mention the environmental impact. If the fact that your vehicle choice is a major reason why we have soldiers in Iraq doesn’t make you rethink, you also have to deal with the fact that your tank is a major threat to the rest of us in a crash, not just us scooterists, but people in normal sized cars. You may not give a shit, but some of us like to think about how our choices affect other people. I’m currently in the market for a new car for my wife, we could easily buy an H2, but we’ve instead agreed that it would be much better for us and the rest of society and the environment if we got her into a Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris instead.

Yikes! Turn it down a notch or two. I don’t own a Hummer – never had. I am a scooter owner/rider just like you and saying that we are at war in Iraq because of Hummer owners is a bit absurd. I am all for alternative energy and energy independence, but I am not going to give someone grief for driving a vehicle that I wouldn’t. Sure, most H2 owners are probably posers that never even get their vehicle dirty much less take it off road – but this is America and one of the lynch pins of the American Society is freedom – freedom to own whatever vehicle you see fit as long as it is within the law. Currently there is no law against someone owning a Hummer and driving it by themselves everyday all day long. Would I do that? Probably not. Do I think it is a good idea? No. But that is America – you take the good with the bad when it comes to freedom. In America you have the freedom to drive a gas-guzzling monster of a vehicle all you want.

I got flamed once too – seems some got upset about a Picachu painted Hummer, and I commented that it was entirely appropriate, as they both appealed to 12 year old boys. That was fun.

Completely agree with Tim. It is my right to drive what I want to drive, just it like it is your right to say what you want to say. It is not crimimal to own or drive a Hummer.
I ride my bike to the train station (Sometimes walk), I take mass transit to work everyday. I use subway and buses whenever I can. I drive my little Toyota corolla to the ground (It is 15 years old with 70k miles on it). I am almost vegetarian, and I buy local produce whenever it is in season. I live in a small house, I do my own laundry, no dry cleaning, My heating bill is about $150.00 a month in the winter, and my electric bill is about $80.00 in the dead heat of summer, I never travel in private jet, I don’t even fly first or business class, I only travel once a year. So, I guess I leave a rather small carbon foot print compare to other people right?
I am in the market for a new car. And I picked the Hummer 3. I don’t drive much, but I would like a big enough car to carry my bike, trail my daugther’s horse, move stuffs when I need it, and drive to the snow country when I want to. So, what is wrong with getting a Hummer that I feel I won’t put more than 4000 miles on per year? Why should I be hated because of what car I drive? So, everything else I do as a responsible human being doesn’t count anymore just because I am a occassional Hummer Driver?
I like the look of the car, just like people likes ugly dogs or cats, I happen to like the ugly look of the Hummer. Ever heard of the expression as “It is so ugly that it is actually kinda cute” I know I won’t drive enough to make the gas price hurt my wallet. Besides the point, the car is not even that expensive, it cost the same or less than a BMW 3 series. (Probably use just a tag more of gas than those little sedans, I know because my husband own one)
Since now that I had been Naturalized US citizen, I would prefer to help out my own countryman and buy American instead of foreign. Is that wrong too? So, I should be hated just because I want a Hummer? Not a Hybrid? How do you know I am not converting the Hummer to a Biofuel in a few year when the techology is available for mass market?
Lighten up people, your objective is not scrunize your fellow countrymen who have a different taste than you. You objective should be hounding our politicians, and government to be less wasteful, develop new alternative energy and maybe even start a movement as be “Energy independent in 10 years”. So we can screwed the oil rich Middle Eastern country royally. They will no longer be able to hold energy source over our head, and may actually have to change for the better.
Am I sounding a little hypocritical? Maybe, since I do want a big car. But the distance I drive is minimal, so, why can’t I have what I would like, but still be an Environmentally Friendly Human Being?
