Choosing style over speed: “Other scooter owners identify with the tougher image displayed by disaffected British teenagers as they rode around emulating Sting in 1979′s ‘Quadrophenia.’ Nicole Kidman also rides one in the recently released ‘The Interpreter.’ In real life, Gwyneth Paltrow has one, as do Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert De Niro.

‘It’s not a question of speed, it’s a question of style,’ said Anna Giordano, 37, of New Rochelle, who owns 35 vintage scooters and admires their clean lines, bright colors and self-contained design.

Besides the romance, there are practical reasons to ride scooters. With gas prices hovering around $2.50 per gallon, it can’t hurt that scooters can go 100 miles on a single gallon and be bought new for $2,000 to $6,000.”
