The Tank Sports 250 scooter gets a review

Found this review floating about Twitter.  Thanks to mscootermama for the scoop.  Thought it might be useful to someone out there.  Read the short piece over at motor scooters guide.

Oh, and here’s a funny one.  Javier compares a Tank Touring 250 to the Kymco Bet and Win 250 and says, “Acceleration, braking, comfort and ride on both scooters is very similar.”  I know a few rabid B&W 250 fans that would barf on your shoes for that statement.  At least he didn’t say it was better than the Majesty that it is trying to copy.

It is a copy of a Burgman. I have heard that it is slower than a Helix.

    What a P.O.S.
That’s funny that they compared it to the Bet and Win.
The only thing those two scooters share is an awful name.

I thought all these were Honda Reflex clones. There’s a metric Chinese buttload of ‘em, these days.

Funny. I have ridden the Bet and Win 250 (what a name). I did not like the ride, the handling was dicey. Kinda felt like the front and back were held together with a very old, tired rubber band. The Bajaj I rode that day was better. More percieved power, better handling and generally less scarey.
I have never ridden a Tank. Anyone have any riding impressions to share?

Pretty cool…gotta love all the different types of scooters. Electric is the best…efficient & eco-conscious!

Chinese, Italian, Martian, Venuvian…. It’s all in how you ride ‘em and how well you take care of them. You’ve got gold nuggets and you have turd nuggets I like the feel of a bet and Win 250 and I like the tried and tested method of shoehorning a big engine in a little frame (although that bike could use more on-board storage). This one is a Burgman 400 clone fitted with a 250 engine. If it’s slow, then it’s because of that extra bulk. And I’m willing to bet that the writer of that atricle didn’t read a manual or do thorough research on that bike at all.

I cant say much about the China 250s, but I have ridden a Kymco bet and win and I didnt like it. The steering was very heavy in the corners and I didnt find it to be all that much nicer than my 150cc China pos.

For the money I’ll keep the cheapo’s for now.

Hey Steve, Thanks for the holler! (I’m mscootermama on Twitter). Motor-Scooters-Guide.com is my baby and we’re always looking for more reviews from knowledgeable scooter owners. The Tank 250 review on the site has gotten quite a few comments already. Seems this is one you either love or hate.

This is a disaster scooter. I did some homework before I got this bike. But the problem was that this version just came out in 2008. I trusted the 2007 reviews and decided to get it.

Problems started the very first week and in less than 400 miles. The coil burned as I have been told. $300 later, I got the bike back and the dashboard stopped working. Then the lights stopped working. All these before even 600 miles.

I did everything to return it from where I bought (RabbitScooters) to no avail! I even sent it to the distributor facility in LA for fixing the bike. I got the bike back and guess what, it didn’t even turn on!

Another $200 later, the gas indicator was not working. At 5500 RPM it starts choking and ripping and stalling! It has Oil leak. It has so many problems that I don’t know where to start.
    - Very poor material quality. Plastic parts that should get connected to each other don’t even fit. Once you open any part you can not close it any more!
    - Unreliable (I don’t trust this bike to go farther than 20 miles)
    - Very heavy
    - Underperformed (No torque)
    - Very hard to put gas on
Non functioning knobs that even the seller didn’t know what it was for!

Just stay away from it. Don’t even think about it. Not worth it at all.

Yeah, i’ve had one in the shop since November. Just about every piece has been replaced and it *still* won’t run.

I've owned two bet & wins over the years and a bajaj chetak and recently rode a friends tank 250. To the comment about the bajaj offering a smoother ride than than the bw, complete shenanigans! the ride is meant for people who enjoy sporty bikes with more power, not your grandads motorized cruiser. the tank was nowhere in comparison to a bw, but for 2k its a great deal and with proper maintenance the tank 250 can be a good investment,

I am agreeing with Sean! If, you are not mechanically inclined…Stay away from these inexpensive Chinese scooters!
I purchased a 2008 Tank Touring 250DE with problems from the start and the dealer disappeared! That is 2 warnings for scooter newbies.

These scooters are a bad investment. First bikes. Didn't do enough research. Was fascinated with the warranty. bought to see if spouse & I truly would enjoy riding or was going through a phased. Purchased two tank scooters. The 150cc & 250cc. The 150 runs better than the 250, but, both are crappy. gone through 3 batteries, a boltage regulator, embarassments, & being stranded on the side of a country road waiting for roadside service due to the 250 sudden loss of life. Due to my own error, the 150 fell on it's left side and the brake handle broke into two pieces. The handle is made of some type of composite graphite blended materials that is coated in black. It is not solid throughout. I was still able to ride it home, but have had problems finding parts or anyone that wants to work on the bike. The compartment boxes do not shut properly and sometimes the seat have to be pushed several times before it secures properly down. Problems with the lights on the 250 also. The 150 mirrors will not stay in place when riding. Did all I could to secure them, but the mirrors keep moving, which is bad when trying to see what is behind you. The warranty is worthless because the bikes overall are inferior products. Looking to sell them bu first got to get them in running condition. Buy any brand out there made from Japan or Taiwan, but stay away from the Chinese brands. The chinese have not pefected their product yet.

Probably because in Japan and Taiwan they can actually ride gas powered scooters, whereas in China they are banned! They only allow "electric bikes" there. That's presumably to cut down on the swarms of bikes like you get in Taiwan and other southeast Asian countries, but their traffic is now just clogged with cars instead. So since they don't make them for the home market, I'd stay away too.
